Greens to stand in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election
Every vote for the Scottish Greens is a vote for people and planet. The Scottish Greens have announced that they will be standing in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election on June 5th. The Green candidate, Ann McGuinness, is a voice for equality and climate action in South Lanarkshire and beyond. Ann is a director of a charity which promotes rural connections and champions rural diversity. Her own lived experiences of poverty and disability provide her with valuable insight into the challenges faced by many whose voices are often unheard in our public discourse. A dedicated feminist and environmental justice campaigner, Ann is a mum of two and has championed…

Stronger action on Fly Tipping, Litter and Waste
South Lanarkshire is a beautiful county, but too often our streets and country lanes are scarred by fly tipping. It’s illegal, brings an area down, can be dangerous and is expensive for landowners and the council to clear up. In this year’s council budget, South Lanarkshire’s only Green councillor supported a re-introduction of one free bulky uplift and proposed £2 million for more enforcement staff and funding for barriers, fines, CCTV and reuse and repair initiatives. Unfortunately, this latter proposal did not get the support of other councillors but Kirsten will keep pushing for more action. However, she did secure a trial of free compost bins, helping you to avoid…

Council budget: 10 minutes to consider multi-million pound budgets – is this acceptable?
With the South Lanarkshire Council budget being set next week (26th February), Green Councillor, Kirsten Robb, is pushing for greater transparency that she believes will improve the budget setting process. As Kirsten pointed out: “In previous years, I’ve had 10 minutes to consider 2 multi-million pound budgets affecting all of South Lanarkshire, much less time than for normal council motions. I think more budget transparency would improve our politics, build trust, increase scrutiny and take the best ideas from across the political spectrum to improve our communities. “ After the budget last year, Kirsten proposed an amendment to the council’s standing orders that all parties should publish their budgets well…

Helping with your housing problems
Housing problems form a major part of Green Party Councillor, Kirsten Robb’s case work. In this post by Kirsten, she looks at why this is the case, how things have changed and provides a link to all the resources that can be used to help solve some of your housing problems. When I was knocking doors before the election, residents told me that housing and maintenance were amongst the top issues they wanted me to help them with. When the New Town of East Kilbride (where I’m a councillor) was still new and the council (or Corporation as it was then) housing stock was high, I am told you had…

Meetings are off at the council for a month and the general election is done. The Green vote share quadrupled nationally and we got 4 MPs. We will keep working for you every day and encourage those in charge to be bolder and more creative to tackle the many challenges we face.
